The same pattern, straight and swung

Set swing to zero and the beat sounds like a metronome. Push it to thirty and it starts to breathe - every off-beat eighth arrives late, which is exactly what a human drummer does and what a quantised grid never does. That knob is the single largest lofi control on this page, and it is not an effect.

Swing, and a lot of it

Twenty-five to thirty-five percent, where most genres use five to fifteen. Every off-beat eighth lands late, which is what a person playing an MPC does and what a grid never does on its own. This is the biggest single lever and it costs nothing.

The kit sits behind the beat

Beyond swing, nudge the snare a few milliseconds late. The kick stays on the grid and holds the tempo; the snare dragging behind it is what produces the relaxed, slightly tired feel that defines the genre.

Roll off above about 8 kHz and below about 60 Hz. Lofi sounds small on purpose - it is imitating equipment that could not reproduce the extremes, and a beat that goes from 20 Hz to 20 kHz will never sit right no matter how much crackle you add.

Hats at the same volume sixteen times is a machine. Vary them between roughly 60 and 90 percent and the pattern starts sounding played. Two identical hits in a row are what give a lofi beat away.

Major sevenths, minor ninths, elevenths - chords with more notes than the genre needs. This is what people are actually responding to when they call lofi "warm", far more than any tape emulation.

Six steps to a lofi beat in twenty minutes

Start at 82 BPM with swing at 30

Before you place a single hit. Setting the feel first means every decision after it inherits the groove, instead of you trying to add groove at the end.

Kick on one, snare on the backbeat, and stop

Four hits. Lofi drum patterns are simpler than almost any other genre and the restraint is what leaves room for the harmony.

Add eighth-note hats with uneven velocity

Never the same twice. This is thirty seconds of work and it is the difference between programmed and played.

Write the chords with too many notes

A minor ninth, a major seventh. Play them badly on purpose - slightly rolled rather than perfectly together - and they sound human immediately.

Roll off the top and the bottom

Above 8 kHz and below 60 Hz. The beat should sound like it is coming from the next room, and that smallness is the aesthetic rather than a compromise.

Only now add saturation and noise

A little. If the beat did not already feel like lofi before this step, the effects will not rescue it - go back to the swing knob.

Why lofi is a rhythm genre, not a texture genre

The name points at the wrong thing. "Low fidelity" describes the surface - the noise, the narrow range, the wobble - but none of that is why anyone listens. What holds attention is the groove: a heavily swung, slightly behind-the-beat pattern that feels like a person rather than a grid. The texture is a costume over that. This is easy to prove: take any lofi beat, quantise it perfectly, and leave every effect in place. It stops working immediately.

Where the sound came from

The lineage runs through J Dilla and Nujabes and the hardware they used. Early samplers had limited memory, so records were sampled at low rates and bit depths - the degradation was a constraint, not a choice. Dilla's particular contribution was refusing to quantise: leaving hits where his hands put them, so the snare drags and the hats push. What is now imitated with a plugin was originally a person and a machine that could not fix them.

The trap of the loop

Lofi is built for repetition, which makes it very easy to write eight bars and nothing else. The fix is subtraction rather than addition: drop the hats for four bars, mute the kick under the melody, let a bar go by with only the chords. A lofi track holds up over three minutes because things keep leaving, not because things keep arriving. Usually 70 to 90, most often around 80 to 85. The tempo matters less than the swing amount - a straight beat at 82 does not sound like lofi at all.

How much swing should a lofi beat have?

Do I need vinyl crackle and tape saturation?
