Two oscillators, six wavetables

Each oscillator runs either the four classic shapes or a wavetable: shapes, PWM, vowel, additive, neuro and bell. The POS knob scans 128 interpolated frames, so the timbre bends continuously instead of jumping between presets - and the frame stack is drawn live above the knob.

Four-slot modulation matrix

Route LFO 1, LFO 2, either envelope, velocity or the mod wheel to pitch, cutoff, amplitude, pan - or the wavetable position itself, which is where the sound really starts moving. Amounts are bipolar, from −100 % to +100 %, so a single source can open one destination while it closes another.

One envelope for amplitude, one for the filter, each with its own attack, decay, sustain and release. The curve redraws as you move a handle, so you shape the sound by looking at it rather than by guessing millisecond values.

Multi-mode filter with drive

Lowpass, highpass, bandpass and notch, with cutoff, resonance and a drive stage that adds grit before the amplifier. The frequency response is plotted next to the knobs and follows the filter envelope in real time.

Getting started

From blank tab to first patch in four steps

Enable the audio engine

Browsers block sound until you interact with the page. Click Enable audio once and the Web Audio graph spins up - CPU meter included, so you can see what the synth costs you.

Pick a table, then scan it

Hit WT on an oscillator, choose a table, and turn POS until the frame stack lands somewhere you like. NEURO low is your bass, VOWEL mid is your pad, ADDITIVE high is your lead - then detune the second oscillator by a few cents for width.

Shape it with filter and envelopes

Pull the cutoff down until the sound darkens, add resonance until it starts to sing, then use the filter envelope to decide whether it snaps open or drifts open.

Bring it to life, then save

Assign an LFO to cutoff in the matrix, switch on reverb and delay, play a chord to hear all 16 voices, and store the result as your own preset.

A synthesizer that lives in a browser tab

Software synths used to mean an installer, a plugin format, a host that recognises it and a folder of presets somewhere you will never find again. Quantum Synthesizer X skips all of it. It is a complete wavetable voice - two scanning oscillators, filter, envelopes, modulation and effects - written against the Web Audio API and rendered on a single screen, so the whole instrument is one URL away on whatever machine you happen to be sitting at.

Wavetables you can see moving

A wavetable is a stack of waveforms rather than a single one. Quantum ships six of them - SHAPES, PWM, VOWEL, ADDITIVE, NEURO and BELL - and builds 128 interpolated frames between the corners of each, so scanning is continuous rather than stepped. The POS knob moves the playhead through the stack; the oscilloscope above it draws the neighbouring frames behind the one you are actually hearing, which turns sound design into something you can aim at instead of guess at.

Built for sound design, not just for notes

The interesting part of any synth is what moves. Quantum gives you two LFOs, two envelopes, velocity and the mod wheel as sources, and lets four slots point them wherever you like - including at the wavetable position itself, so the timbre travels while the note is held. Because amounts are bipolar, the same LFO can open the filter while pulling the amplitude down, which is how movement stops sounding like a wobble and starts sounding like an instrument. Add the drive stage on the filter and the six-module effects rack, and the same patch can go from a soft Rhodes-ish pad to a distorted neuro lead without leaving the page.

Everything is visible while it happens

Each oscillator has its own scope with its wavetable stack, the master output has another, the filter response is plotted against the knobs, every effect has a small animated display and a CPU meter tells you what the whole thing costs. When a patch is wrong, you can usually see why before you hear why.

Frequently asked

Do I need to install anything to use Quantum Synthesizer X?

No. The whole synth is built on the Web Audio API and runs inside your browser tab. Open the page, click “Enable audio” once to satisfy the browser autoplay policy, and you are playing. There is no plugin, no VST host and no download.

Can I play it with my MIDI keyboard?

Yes. Quantum listens to Web MIDI, so any class-compliant USB or Bluetooth controller connected to your machine drives it - including velocity, pitch bend and the mod wheel. You can also play from your computer keyboard or from the on-screen keys and the 16 LED pads.

How many notes can it play at once?

Up to 16 simultaneous voices. Each voice runs its own pair of oscillators, its filter envelope and its amplitude envelope, so pads and stacked chords keep their movement instead of collapsing into one shape.

What can the modulation matrix actually modulate?

Four freely assignable slots. Each one routes a source - LFO 1, LFO 2, Envelope 1, Envelope 2, velocity or the mod wheel - to a destination: pitch, filter cutoff, amplitude, pan or the wavetable position, with a bipolar amount from -100 % to +100 %. Negative amounts invert the modulation, which is where most of the interesting patches live. Out of the box, velocity is wired to the wavetable position: hit harder, land on a brighter frame.

What does the wavetable engine actually do?

Each oscillator can leave the classic waveforms behind and scan a wavetable instead. A table is a stack of harmonic frames; Quantum interpolates 128 positions between them and rebuilds the waveform for whichever position you land on. Six tables ship with the synth - shapes, PWM, vowel, additive, neuro and bell - and the POS knob, an LFO or an envelope can sweep through any of them while a note is held. The frame stack is drawn above each oscillator so you can see the morph as you hear it.

Is Quantum Synthesizer X free?

Can I save my own patches?

Yes. Four factory presets ship with the synth - Init Patch, Quantum Bass, Space Pad and Neuro Lead - and the save button stores your own on top of them. The dice button randomises the whole patch when you need a starting point rather than a blank slate.
