Nothing is hidden. The AI modes produce steps on the same grid you would have clicked yourself, so anything it writes can be edited, muted or thrown away by hand.

The interesting part is not that it generates patterns - it is that four sliders decide what kind.

Four modes, four behaviours

Generative writes from scratch. Reactive responds to what is already there. Evolutionary mutates a pattern across repetitions so it drifts rather than loops. Chaos does what it says. They are genuinely different processes, not four labels on one randomiser.

Complexity, density, variation, mutation

Density is how many hits; complexity is how irregular they are; variation is how much each repetition differs; mutation is how fast that drift accumulates. Between them they cover the distance from a metronome to something unlistenable.

Kick, snare, hi-hat, two percussion slots, bass, lead and pad - each with four sound choices. Enough range that the generator is writing music rather than just drums.

Perform over the top

Performance pads sit beside the sequencer, so you can play against what the machine is writing. With evolutionary mode running underneath, this is the closest thing here to playing with another musician.

Mixer and effects rack

Per-track levels, plus filter with cutoff and resonance, reverb with size, pre-delay and tone, delay with time and feedback, and distortion with drive. Generated patterns need mixing like any other kind.

A preset library to start from, a metronome to work against, loop control and bar and time counters so you know where you are. Generative tools are only useful inside a structure.

Set the four parameters once, then switch modes to hear how differently they read the same settings.

From scratch

GENERATIVE

Writes a full pattern from the parameters alone. The default, and the one to use when the problem is a blank grid rather than a half-finished idea.

Responsive

REACTIVE

Builds around what is already programmed instead of replacing it. Write a kick and a bass line yourself, then let it fill in the percussion.

Drifting

EVOLUTIONARY

Mutates the pattern a little on every pass, so bar sixteen is related to bar one without being identical. Turn mutation down for slow drift, up for restlessness.

Unpredictable

CHAOS

Maximum disorder within the parameters you set. Rarely usable as-is, frequently useful as a source of an idea you would never have written deliberately.

Getting started

From a blank grid to a pattern you would keep

Start generative, low density

Sparse patterns are easier to judge. If it sounds good with few hits, it will sound good with more; the reverse is almost never true.

Move one parameter at a time

Density first - it changes the most. Then complexity for irregularity. Variation and mutation only matter once the pattern is running long enough to repeat.

Edit what it gives you

Generated steps sit on the normal sequencer grid. Delete the three hits that annoy you rather than regenerating and losing the parts that worked.

Switch to evolutionary and play

Let the pattern drift while you play the performance pads over it. This is where the app stops being a generator and starts being an instrument.

Generation as a starting point, not an answer

The problem with most "AI beat" tools is that they hand you a finished loop and leave you with nothing to do except accept or reject it. Neural Beat Forge writes into an ordinary step sequencer, which means everything it produces is editable, mutable and deletable by hand. It solves the blank page and then gets out of the way.

The four parameters do the real work

Density and complexity are the pair that matter most: density decides how many events there are, complexity decides how irregularly they are placed. A dense, simple pattern is techno; a sparse, complex one is something closer to jazz. Variation and mutation then decide whether the loop stays put or gradually becomes something else.

Evolutionary mode is the one to spend time with

A loop that mutates slightly on every pass never quite repeats, which is exactly what makes long sections listenable. Set mutation low and let it run for thirty-two bars - what comes out at the end is recognisably related to what you started with, and you did not program a single variation.

What do the four AI modes actually do?

Generative writes a pattern from the parameters alone. Reactive builds around what is already programmed. Evolutionary mutates the pattern slightly on each repetition so it drifts over time. Chaos maximises disorder within your settings.

Can I edit what it generates?

Yes - that is the point. Generated patterns land on a normal step sequencer grid, so you can delete the hits you dislike, add your own, mute a track or keep half of it and regenerate the rest.

What is the difference between complexity and density?

Density is how many hits there are; complexity is how irregularly they are placed. A dense simple pattern is driving and repetitive; a sparse complex one is unpredictable but leaves space. Most of the useful range is somewhere between the two.

What does mutation control?

How quickly the pattern drifts when evolutionary mode is running. Low values give a loop that changes almost imperceptibly across sixteen bars; high values give something that has become a different pattern by the fourth repetition.

Can I play along with it?

Yes. Performance pads sit alongside the sequencer so you can play over what the machine is writing, and the mixer and effects rack apply to the whole thing. With evolutionary mode running, it behaves more like a duet than a generator.
