From waveform to particle field

The visuals are not a loop playing next to the music. Every frame is rebuilt from a live FFT of whatever you feed in, with sensitivity deciding how hard the field reacts and the preset deciding what shape it takes.

Three ways to feed it

Open your microphone and it reacts to the room, to a live instrument or to whatever is coming out of your speakers. Drop an audio file and it follows the track. Or skip the input entirely and play the built-in synth straight into the field.

Four visual presets

Galaxy spins the particles into arms, Nebula spreads them into a soft cloud, Wormhole pulls them down a tunnel and Supernova blows them outward on every transient. Each one reads the same spectrum but arranges it completely differently.

Up to 5000 particles

The particle count is a slider, not a fixed setting. Push it up for a dense, cinematic field on a fast machine; pull it down on a laptop or a projector feed and the motion stays smooth.

Live spectrum and BPM

Amplitude, frequency and a running BPM estimate are read from the analyser every frame and shown on screen. The tempo readout is what keeps rotation and pulse locked to the music instead of drifting against it.

Fly the camera

Click and drag to orbit, scroll to zoom in or out, press R to snap back to the default view. The rotation slider adds a constant drift if you would rather leave it running than hold the mouse.

Built for a screen behind you

F goes fullscreen, M toggles the microphone, Space pauses and resumes. Everything you need during a set is a single key, so the visualizer can sit on a second display without you leaving the mix.

Switch between them while the same track plays and the difference is immediate.

Rotational

GALAXY

Particles collapse into spiral arms that turn with the tempo. The default, and the one that reads best on a big screen behind a DJ booth.

Ambient

NEBULA

A soft, slow cloud that breathes with amplitude rather than snapping to transients. Made for pads, drones and anything without a hard beat.

Tunnel

WORMHOLE

The field folds into a tunnel and pulls forward, with the low end setting the travel speed. Kicks become distance.

Explosive

SUPERNOVA

Everything blows outward on each transient then falls back in. Loud, literal and very effective on drums.

Getting started

From a blank tab to a full screen of light

Choose an input

Click Mic to react to the room, File to load a track, or Synth to make the sound in the app. The browser asks for microphone permission only when you pick Mic.

Pick a preset

Galaxy for rhythm, Nebula for texture, Wormhole for motion, Supernova for impact. You can switch mid-track without stopping the audio.

Tune the response

Sensitivity decides how violently the field reacts, particle count decides how dense it looks. If it feels sluggish on your machine, drop the count before anything else.

Frame it and let it run

Drag to find an angle, scroll to set the distance, add a little rotation, then press F for fullscreen. Space pauses if you need the picture to hold still.

A music visualizer that reads the actual signal

Plenty of browser visualizers animate a shape and hope it lines up. Audio Universe rebuilds its particle field from a live FFT every frame, so what you see is the spectrum of what you are hearing - the low end moves the mass, the highs scatter it, and the BPM estimate keeps the rotation honest when the track changes tempo.

Useful on stage, not only on a desk

The whole thing is one browser tab with keyboard shortcuts for the three things you need mid-set: fullscreen, mic on or off, and pause. Drop the particle count and it happily runs on the laptop you already brought, on a projector, on a second screen behind the booth. There is nothing to install on a machine that is not yours.

Frequently asked

What can Audio Universe visualise?

Three sources: your microphone, an audio file you load into the page, or the synthesizer built into the app. Because the microphone picks up whatever your room hears, it also works as a general-purpose visualizer for music playing anywhere near the machine.

How many particles can it handle?

Up to 5000, set with a slider. The right number depends on your machine and your screen - a desktop GPU handles the maximum comfortably, while a laptop driving a projector usually looks better with the count reduced and the motion kept smooth.

Does it detect tempo?

Yes. A running BPM estimate is calculated from the incoming audio and displayed on screen, and it is what keeps the rotation and pulse of the presets tied to the music rather than to a fixed timer.

Can I use it for a live set or a VJ screen?

That is what the shortcuts are for. F toggles fullscreen, M toggles the microphone, Space pauses, R resets the camera. Open it on a second display, point it at the room, and it needs no further attention for the rest of the set.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It is a web page built on the Web Audio API and canvas. Open the URL, allow microphone access if you choose the mic input, and it runs - on any machine, without leaving anything behind on it.
