Where a tab wins, and where it loses

A browser synth is a genuine VST alternative for most of what most producers do most days - and a bad answer for three specific jobs. This page names those three first, because a comparison that only lists wins is an advert, and nobody should make a tooling decision from one.

The engine, with nothing installed

Two detuned oscillators into a resonant lowpass with an envelope on the cutoff. Play it against whatever synth you already own and listen for the two things that would actually disqualify it: the delay between key and sound, and whether the filter sounds cheap. Those are the fair tests. Everything else on this page is opinion.

If your work is one of these, no browser synth is the right tool and no amount of copy changes that.

You need one specific plugin

If your sound is a particular instrument - a named analogue emulation, an orchestral library, a plugin your collaborators expect in the session - a browser cannot host it. Browsers do not load VST or AU binaries, and there is no workaround. Keep the DAW for that project.

You are tracking live players

Output buffer size is chosen by the browser and the OS, not by you. An ASIO or Core Audio interface at a 64-sample buffer will always beat it for monitoring a performer in real time. For playing parts in by hand it is comfortable; for recording a drummer it is not.

You work without a connection

A plane, a studio in a basement, a residency with bad wifi. The apps load over the network. If your working conditions are regularly offline, this is disqualifying and no feature list compensates.

Four checks before you decide anything

Time the gap between key and sound

Play the brick above with your computer keyboard and then with a MIDI controller. Whatever you feel is the answer on your machine, which is the only machine that matters. No published latency figure is worth more than this.

Sweep the filter with resonance up

A cheap filter sounds thin at the top and buzzy at resonance. Push the cutoff up and down with resonance near self-oscillation and listen for that. This is where weak synth engines give themselves away.

Open the list of what you actually used last year

Most producers use four or five instruments repeatedly and own forty. Check whether the ones you truly use have an equivalent here - not whether the catalog covers everything, which it does not.

Try to finish something in a tab

Not a patch, a sketch: eight bars with drums, a bass and a lead. That is the only test that reveals whether the workflow suits you, and it takes twenty minutes.

What "VST alternative" usually means in practice

Almost nobody searching this phrase wants to replace their entire plugin folder. They want one of three things: a synth that costs nothing up front, a synth that runs on a machine where they cannot install software, or a way to start writing without the fifteen-minute ritual of booting a DAW. A browser synth answers all three well. It does not answer "I need this exact instrument", and pretending otherwise is how comparison pages lose their credibility.

The price shape is different, not just smaller

Plugin synths are bought once and owned forever, which is genuinely better if you keep them for a decade. A subscription is worse in that scenario and better in two others: when you are not sure yet whether you will still be producing in a year, and when you would otherwise be spending several hundred up front to find out. What you stop dealing with

No installer, no authorisation server, no plugin scan on every boot, no instrument that breaks after an OS update, no version drift between your laptop and the studio machine, no project that only opens on one computer. None of that is glamorous and all of it costs real hours. Can a browser synth replace a VST?

For writing, sketching, learning synthesis and most sound design, yes - the engine runs the same kind of oscillator and filter maths in native browser code. It cannot replace a VST when you need one specific third-party instrument, when you are tracking live players at very low buffer sizes, or when you work offline.

Why can I not load VST plugins in a browser?

VST and AU are compiled binaries that a host application loads into its own process. A browser tab is sandboxed and cannot execute arbitrary native code, which is a security property, not an oversight. The trade is that a browser instrument cannot be compromised by a plugin and cannot break your session on an update.

Is a browser synth free?

Does a browser synth sound worse than a plugin?

Not inherently. Oscillators, biquad filters and convolution reverb run in the browser's native audio code at the same sample rate as anything else on your machine. Quality differences come from how the engine was designed, exactly as they do between two plugins.

Can I use my MIDI keyboard?

Yes. Web MIDI passes notes, velocity, pitch bend, mod wheel and CC through with no driver for class-compliant controllers. Chrome and Edge are the most complete; Firefox works; Safari varies by version.

Can I get the audio out into my DAW?

Yes - the full instruments export WAV, and sequences export MIDI, so a part written in the browser can be finished in an installed DAW. Many people use it exactly that way rather than as a replacement.
