Why wavetable took over modern production
Subtractive synthesis makes a static sound interesting by removing parts of it over time. That works, and it is why the classics sound the way they do - but the source never changes, so everything you hear is a filter and an envelope doing their best. Wavetable moves the change upstream. The oscillator itself becomes a different shape mid-note, which produces motion a filter simply cannot imitate: harmonics appearing and disappearing rather than being uncovered and covered again.
It is not a sample, and that matters
A wavetable holds single cycles, not recordings. Each frame is a few hundred samples, looped forever, so pitch is generated rather than stretched - there is no formant shift, no tuning artefact, no multi-gigabyte library. The whole table is smaller than a photograph, which is precisely why it is workable in a browser while a sampled orchestra is not.
