One knob that changes the waveform itself

A wavetable synthesizer does not have one waveform, it has a row of them - and a position control that walks along that row while the note is still ringing. That single idea is why wavetable patches sound like they are alive, and why every modern bass and lead you have heard for fifteen years came out of one.

A single frame, so you can hear what one costs

This brick plays one fixed waveform through one filter - a single frame of a wavetable, held still. Play a long note and listen to how little happens after the attack. That stillness is exactly the problem wavetable synthesis was invented to solve: in Quantum the same note walks through sixty-four of these frames while you hold it.

A frame is one cycle

The smallest unit is a single cycle of a waveform - a few hundred samples, looped. On its own it is just a tone with a fixed harmonic content: bright, hollow, nasal, whatever the shape dictates. Nothing about it changes over time.

Stack sixty-four frames side by side, ordered so that neighbours resemble each other, and you have a wavetable. Frame 1 might be a sine, frame 64 a hard-clipped square, and everything between them a gradual morph from one to the other.

Position is the whole instrument

One control decides which frame you are hearing. Leave it still and you have a static oscillator. Move it and the harmonic content changes continuously - not a filter opening, not a crossfade between two sounds, but the waveform itself becoming a different shape.

What moves the position

An envelope gives you a sound that transforms once per note - the classic evolving bass. An LFO gives you a cycle that never settles. The mod wheel gives it to your hand. Velocity makes hard notes brighter in a way no filter quite reproduces.

The filter still matters

Wavetable does not replace subtractive synthesis, it feeds it. You still run the oscillator into a resonant filter with its own envelope. What changes is that the thing being filtered is no longer standing still.

Build a moving bass in six moves

Pick a table with a real range

You want frame 1 and frame 64 to be genuinely different. A table that morphs from sine to saw gives you somewhere to travel; one that morphs between two similar shapes gives you nothing to automate.

Set position to the dull end and play a note

Start where the sound is closed and unremarkable. This is the destination, not the starting point - counter-intuitive, but it makes the next step land.

Route an envelope to position, not the filter

Fast attack, medium decay. The note now opens up harmonically and settles back, and it does not sound like a filter sweep because it is not one.

Add a slow LFO on top, very small amount

Ten to fifteen percent. Enough that a held note never sits perfectly still, not so much that it wobbles. This is what separates a patch from a preset.

Now bring in the filter

With the table already moving, the filter can stay mostly open. Use it to fit the sound into the mix rather than to create the movement.

Automate position in the arrangement

One value in the verse, another in the drop. Same patch, same notes, a bass that grew - with no second instrument and no layering.

Why wavetable took over modern production

Subtractive synthesis makes a static sound interesting by removing parts of it over time. That works, and it is why the classics sound the way they do - but the source never changes, so everything you hear is a filter and an envelope doing their best. Wavetable moves the change upstream. The oscillator itself becomes a different shape mid-note, which produces motion a filter simply cannot imitate: harmonics appearing and disappearing rather than being uncovered and covered again.

It is not a sample, and that matters

A wavetable holds single cycles, not recordings. Each frame is a few hundred samples, looped forever, so pitch is generated rather than stretched - there is no formant shift, no tuning artefact, no multi-gigabyte library. The whole table is smaller than a photograph, which is precisely why it is workable in a browser while a sampled orchestra is not.

Is a wavetable the same as a sample?

No. A sample is a recording played back and pitched. A wavetable frame is a single cycle looped indefinitely, so pitch is synthesised rather than stretched. That is why wavetables stay tiny and stay clean at any pitch.

Can a browser run a wavetable synth properly?
