The browser is not the workaround

A Chromebook cannot run a desktop DAW, and the usual workarounds - Android apps, Linux containers - are worse in practice than they sound in a forum post. The thing that actually works is the browser, and not as a compromise: on this machine the Web Audio API is the audio platform. Play the synth below and the argument is finished.

Two oscillators and a filter, on a machine that runs no DAW

Play it with the A–K row of the keyboard. Two detuned oscillators into a resonant lowpass with an envelope on the cutoff - a genuine subtractive voice, generated by ChromeOS's own audio stack. Android apps - usually disappointing

Chromebooks can run Android apps, and there are real music apps in the store. The trouble is that they were designed for a touchscreen phone held in two hands, and a Chromebook is a keyboard and a trackpad. Audio latency through the Android layer is also worse than through the browser. It works; it rarely gets used twice.

Linux containers - technically possible, practically painful

The Linux development environment can install Ardour or LMMS. On the low-power hardware most Chromebooks ship with, audio through the container layer is unreliable, MIDI is fiddly, and you will spend more time on configuration than on music. Fine as a hobby; poor as a way to write.

Browser studios - the actual answer

No install, no container, no compatibility layer. The Web Audio API runs in ChromeOS's native audio path, which on a Chromebook is the shortest route to the speakers that exists. This is the one route where the Chromebook is not fighting you.

Six minutes to a Chromebook that makes music properly

Update ChromeOS first

Web Audio and Web MIDI both improved substantially across recent versions, and school-managed devices are often behind. This is the single highest-value step and it costs nothing.

Get headphones on it

Chromebook speakers are small and thin and cannot reproduce bass at all. You cannot mix what you cannot hear, and any wired headphones beat any software upgrade here.

Close everything else

Most Chromebooks ship with four gigabytes of RAM. Audio has its own thread, but memory pressure is shared, and twenty tabs is where stuttering starts.

Plug in a controller if you have one

Class-compliant USB and Bluetooth MIDI keyboards work through Web MIDI with no driver - which also means no admin rights, so a managed school device will still accept one.

Add a USB microphone if you want to record voice

The built-in mic is designed for video calls. A basic USB condenser is the difference between a demo and something usable.

Why Chromebooks and browser studios fit so well

A Chromebook is a machine designed around one assumption: the browser is the operating system. That assumption is a handicap for most professional software and an advantage for exactly one category. Browser studios are not being tolerated by ChromeOS - they are running on the thing it does best, through its native audio path, with no compatibility layer in between. The consequence is that a three-hundred-euro Chromebook often gives smoother audio in a browser studio than it gives in an Android app on the same hardware.

The hardware you should actually buy

Eight gigabytes of RAM if the budget stretches, because tab count is the real constraint. Beyond that, processor generation matters more than core count for audio work, and screen size matters more than either for anything with a grid in it. What you do not need is a discrete GPU, a large SSD or a high-refresh display - none of those touch audio performance.

What this does not solve

No offline work, no VST plugins, and no low-latency multitrack recording of live players. Those are the same three limits every browser studio has, and they are worked through on the browser-based DAW page. If your Chromebook is your only machine and you need any of the three, the honest answer is that you will eventually need a second computer - not a different website.
