How to make an 808
It is one sine wave, and four decisions

The 808 that carries half of modern music is not a sample library, it is a sine wave with a pitch envelope on the front and a long decay on the back. Once you know the four decisions that shape it - tuning, decay, glide and saturation - you can build one from scratch in any synth, and fix a bad one in any project.

Four notes, and the whole low end of the track

The bottom row is a synthesised 808: a sine at around 46 Hz with a click of pitch on the attack. Mute everything else and listen to it alone - it is almost nothing. Bring the kick back and hear the problem every trap producer meets on day one: two sounds fighting for the same forty hertz. Move the 808 off the kick steps and the low end suddenly has room.

A sine, and only a sine

The fundamental is a pure sine wave, typically between 40 and 60 Hz. No detune, no second oscillator, no filter needed - anything harmonically richer stops being an 808 and starts being a bass patch. Everything else in this list is applied to that one sine.

The pitch envelope is the click

The attack drops from roughly an octave above the target down to the fundamental in twenty to forty milliseconds. That drop is what your ear reads as a kick transient. Shorten it and you get a tick; lengthen it past a hundred milliseconds and you get a sound effect rather than a drum.

Decay is arrangement, not sound design

A short 808 at 400 ms leaves the bar open and works in busy beats. A long one at two seconds becomes the bassline itself and dictates the harmony. Decide this against the tempo and the vocal, not against how the 808 sounds soloed.

Glide is what makes it melodic

Overlap two notes and let the pitch slide between them instead of retriggering. That portamento is the sound of the last decade of trap and drill - and it is one parameter, not a technique.

Saturation is how it survives a phone

A 45 Hz sine is inaudible on a laptop speaker. Distortion adds harmonics at 90, 135 and 180 Hz, which small speakers can reproduce, and your brain reconstructs the missing fundamental from them. Drive it until you hear it on a phone, then back off one notch.

Tune it, always

An untuned 808 fights the key of the track and makes the whole mix feel wrong for reasons nobody can name. Match the root of the progression: E1 is about 41 Hz, F1 about 44, G1 about 49. This single step fixes more amateur mixes than any plugin.

The complaint is almost always one of these six, and the fix is almost never a new sample.

From scratch

Six steps to an 808 you can use in a real track

Start with a sine at the root of your key

Not a preset. One oscillator, sine wave, tuned to the root note of the progression. If the track is in F minor, that is F1 - about 44 Hz.

Set the amplitude envelope

Attack 2–5 ms so it does not click, sustain at full, release matching the decay you want. Attack at exactly zero is the single most common mistake here.

Add the pitch envelope

Route an envelope to oscillator pitch, amount around one octave, decay 20–40 ms. Play a note: you should now hear a distinct thump on the front instead of a note fading in.

Set the decay against the tempo

Long enough to ring into the next beat, short enough that two notes never overlap unintentionally. At 140 BPM a quarter note is about 430 ms - start there and adjust.

Drive it until it survives a small speaker

Add saturation or soft clipping and check on the worst speaker you own. When you can hear the pitch of the 808 on a phone, stop.

Turn on glide and write a melody

Overlap two notes and the pitch slides. Now the 808 is not a drum any more, it is the bassline - which is exactly what it is for in trap and drill.

Where the 808 actually came from

The Roland TR-808 shipped in 1980, sold badly and was discontinued in 1983. Its bass drum voice was an analogue circuit - a bridged-T oscillator whose long, tuned decay was, by the standards of the time, a flaw: it sounded nothing like a real kick drum. Hip-hop and electro producers bought the machines second-hand precisely because of that flaw, and forty years later the "808" no longer refers to a drum machine at all. It refers to that sound: a low sine with a pitch drop and a long tail, used as bass.

Sample or synthesise?

Both are legitimate and they fail differently. A sample gives you a finished character instantly, but pitching it far from its original note stretches it - go down a fifth and the decay lengthens and the transient smears. A synthesised 808 is always in tune at any pitch because it is generated, and every part of it stays adjustable while you arrange. For a bassline that moves through a progression, synthesis wins on consistency.

The kick problem, honestly

The most common 808 complaint is not about the 808. It is that the kick and the 808 occupy the same frequencies at the same instant, and the two waveforms partially cancel - which is heard as a low end that has energy but no impact. Three fixes, in order of how much they cost you: do not place them on the same step; sidechain the 808 to duck under the kick; or high-pass the kick and let the 808 own everything below 80 Hz. How do you make an 808 from scratch?

One sine oscillator tuned to the root of your key, an amplitude envelope with a 2–5 ms attack and a long decay, and a pitch envelope dropping about an octave over 20–40 ms. Add saturation so it survives small speakers. That is the entire recipe.

What note should an 808 be tuned to?

The root note of your chord progression, in the first octave. E1 is roughly 41 Hz, F1 roughly 44 Hz, G1 roughly 49 Hz. An untuned 808 is the most common cause of a mix that feels wrong without anyone being able to say why.

Why does my 808 disappear on phone speakers?

A phone speaker cannot reproduce 45 Hz at all. Saturation adds harmonics at multiples of the fundamental - 90 Hz, 135 Hz, 180 Hz - which small speakers can play, and the ear reconstructs the missing fundamental from them. Distortion is not a stylistic choice on an 808, it is what makes it audible.

How do I make my 808 glide?

Overlap two notes so the second starts before the first has released, and turn on glide or portamento. The pitch slides between them instead of retriggering the envelope. Glide time between 60 and 150 ms covers most of what you hear on records.

Should the kick and the 808 play at the same time?

Usually not on the same step. When they must, sidechain the 808 to duck under the kick or high-pass the kick so the 808 owns the sub. Two sounds at the same low frequency at the same moment partially cancel, which reads as a weak low end rather than a loud one.
