Browser-based tools remove the deployment problem entirely - no installer, no admin rights, no per-seat licence, and the same URL on every device in the building. This grid needs no account and no install. Send thirty students to a URL and every one of them has sound within a minute - which is the difference between a music lesson and a support session. Mute a row, change the swing, and you have a working demonstration of rhythm programming with nothing prepared.

Chromebooks are the majority of school hardware in many countries and run no desktop DAW at all. A browser tool works identically on ChromeOS, Windows, macOS and the six-year-old laptop at the back of the room.
No install, no licence key, no first-run wizard. The time between "open your laptops" and a student hearing something they made is the number that decides whether a scheme of work survives.
A different room each period, a shared device, a laptop that got reimaged. Projects living in an account instead of a hard drive removes an entire category of lost homework.
WAV and MIDI export into Drive or a shared folder like any other assignment. No proprietary project format for a marker to open.
The right-hand column is the important one. A department that discovers it in week two will not forgive it.

Not the teacher laptop. If the five-year-old Chromebook at the back plays cleanly, the technology question is settled and the rest is pedagogy.

Group composition needs collaboration features, and GOONS does not have them - Soundtrap or BandLab do. Teaching how a filter or an envelope works needs separate instruments, which is the opposite trade.
Whatever platform you choose, teach exporting WAV and MIDI immediately. It is the only thing that survives a licence ending, a platform closing or a student leaving.
Data, ownership and continuity between school years are the questions procurement will ask and the ones vendors answer least clearly. Ask early.
Each is a separate engine, which makes it possible to teach one idea at a time.
Music technology in schools fails on logistics far more often than on teaching. A department picks good software, IT cannot deploy it to the Chromebook fleet, half the licences do not activate, the room has four different machine ages, and by the time everyone has sound the period is over. Browser tools do not solve pedagogy, but they delete that entire failure mode: one URL, every device, nothing to install and nothing to license per seat. That is a smaller claim than most education marketing makes and a more useful one.
It is not a replacement for a managed classroom platform. There is no teacher console, no assignment flow, no per-seat administration and no education pricing - a department standardising on it would find all four gaps quickly. Where it fits today is as the depth tool: the place a student who is already producing goes to learn synthesis properly, or the instrument a teacher opens on the projector to demonstrate what a resonant filter does. Thirty pairs of cheap wired headphones will improve outcomes more than any platform decision on this page. Students cannot mix what they cannot hear, and laptop speakers reproduce nothing below about 150 Hz - which is most of what they are trying to make. After that, a handful of class-compliant USB MIDI keyboards, which need no driver and therefore no admin rights. The Chromebook page covers the rest of the hardware question.
Browser-based studios - GOONS, Soundtrap, BandLab and Amped Studio all run on ChromeOS with nothing installed. Desktop DAWs cannot run on Chromebooks at all.

Not in GOONS - there is no real-time multi-user editing. Soundtrap and BandLab both do this and are the right tools when group composition is the assignment.
By exporting WAV audio or MIDI, which save to Downloads or Google Drive like any other file. Project files do not transfer between platforms, so exported formats are what should be submitted.
