Where phonk actually comes from
The source is 1990s Memphis rap - DJ Screw's slowed tapes, Three 6 Mafia's early work, cassettes that were overdriven and dark because of the equipment rather than by design. Producers in the mid 2010s started sampling those tapes and rebuilding the aesthetic deliberately, and around 2020 drift phonk carried it worldwide through short-form video. The cowbell, the distortion and the murk were originally limitations. Two decades later they are the specification.
Why the usual mixing advice does not apply
Almost every mixing guideline exists to preserve clarity and headroom. Phonk trades both on purpose: the 808 clips, the master is loud, the top end is harsh. That is not carelessness, it is the genre signature, and a phonk beat mixed to conventional standards sounds polite and wrong. The one piece of standard advice that still holds is tuning - the 808 and the cowbell must be in the same key, because distortion multiplies a tuning error rather than hiding it.
The short-form video shape
Most phonk is heard in fifteen-second clips on a phone speaker, and the genre evolved to fit that: the hook arrives within a few seconds, the loop is short, and the low end is distorted enough to survive a speaker that reproduces nothing below 200 Hz. Understanding why saturation makes bass audible on small speakers is worth more here than in any other genre, and it is explained on the 808 design page. The neighbouring genres are on the trap and drill pages.
